image If you’ve ever tried using the “Disk Cleanup” function in Windows XP and been completely annoyed with how long it takes to run the “Compress Old Files” step, this article is for you. Just follow the steps below to disable the compression scanning step and have the disk cleanup complete in less than a minute (depending on your hard drive size)

image

  1. Open Registry Editor (Start -> Run -> regedit.exe)
  2. Navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Volume Caches\Compress Old Files
  3. Right-click on the “Compress Old Files” folder/key and choose “Export…”
  4. Save the registry file somewhere easily accessible (probably My Documents) so you can restore it if you need to later.
  5. Now, return to the “Compress Old Files” folder/key and delete all the values within it. (It should look like the image above)
  6. Close Registry Editor, open Explorer, right click on your hard drive (or other drive you wish to clean), choose “Properties”, then choose “Disk Cleanup”.

This should make things a ton faster!

Muh. I’ve been way too busy with work related ruckus to focus on my photography hobby. I’d love to spend more time and get more involved, maybe find a group around town (Portland, OR), a local class, or just some sort of inspiration. Flickr has been great for this in the past, but I barely get any time to look through groups and comment anymore.

If anyone reading this has any suggestions, even just something as simple as a cool idea for a composition, I’d love to hear them. Thanks!

This guy is pretty fun to read, and he’s got some excellent musical
choices. This genre, in particular, uses Squarepusher (one of my
personal favorite artists since “Go Plastic” came out) as an example. I
could see Aphex Twin fitting in here too.

“This stuff is so fucked up, sometimes my head explodes when I listen to it. A cacophony of unique sounds, snares, rolls, and complicated drum patterns makes this one of those genres you have to acquire a taste for. It blurs a lot with IDM, so expect to see artists making ample amounts of both. The difference between the two? One sounds more fucked up than the other. It’s up to you, however, to figure out which one that is.”

From Ars.Technica:

Calling the RIAA’s case unjustified “as a reasonable exploration of the boundaries of copyright law,” a federal magistrate judge late last week awarded former RIAA defendant Tanya Andersen attorneys’ fees for her nearly two-and-a-half-year fight against a copyright infringement lawsuit.

While Andersen’s attorney adds up the bills, Andersen is seeking class-action status for her malicious prosecution lawsuit. Saying that the RIAA “has engaged in a coordinated enterprise to pursue a scheme of threatening and intimidating litigation in an attempt to maintain its music distribution monopoly,” Andersen wants to make a class from those who have been wrongfully sued by the RIAA; if successful, the RIAA could find itself locked in a long and costly legal battle.

Found out a ton of information while stumbling ’round the net today and thought I’d save it for future reference.

Turns out that my Nokia N95 uses a Texas Instruments OMAP 2420 processor consisting of the following components:

Interestingly enough, that PowerVR Graphics Accelerator is also used in the iPhone, though in a different form, via the Samsung S5L8900 chipset.

I found all this out while looking up info on the development of the Sega Dreamcast, which also uses the PowerVR chipset.

So…feel free to ignore all of that if you like. I just find all of this personally fascinating. :-)

No shit. (Pun intended.)

Lick Me in the Ass (German: Leck mich im Arsch) is a canon in B-flat major composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, K. 231 (K382c), with lyrics in German. It was one of a set of at least six canons probably written in Vienna in 1782.[1] Sung by six voices as a three-part round, it is thought to be a party piece for his friends.

The song’s title and lyrics are a reference to anal-oral contact, and may be more idiomatically translated as “kiss my ass” or “get stuffed”.[2] They have been used as evidence to support the contention that Mozart had Tourette syndrome.[3]

At 21, I decided I wasn’t having fun anymore and stopped playing. In retrospect, I should have made this decision much earlier as by the time I quit I had not been enjoying myself for approximately 3 years.

One of the things that fascinates me about Shortwave (see my last post) is the amount of worldwide propaganda floating around out there from various sources. Since shortwave radio reaches much, much longer distances than standard AM/FM radio, it can generally be heard around the world (but is greatly affected by the conditions of the ionosphere and the time of day). One of these stations comes from the United States government, called “Voice of America” (VOA).

Due to the conditions of the Smith-Mundt act, VOA cannot broadcast to audiences inside the United States (though, you can find the webcasts here: http://www.voanews.com/english/webcasts.cfm), and instead targets a worldwide audience. Of particular interest to me recently is the “Special English” broadcast, explained here:

Three Elements Make Special English Unique

It has a core vocabulary of 1500 words. Most are simple words that describe objects, actions or emotions. Some words are more difficult. They are used for reporting world events and describing discoveries in medicine and science.

Special English writers use short, simple sentences that contain only one idea. They use active voice. They do not use idioms.

Special English broadcasters read at a slower pace, about two-thirds the speed of standard English. This helps people learning English hear each word clearly. It also helps people who are fluent English speakers understand complex subjects.

http://www.voanews.com/specialenglish/about_special_english.cfm

It’s surprisingly interesting to listen to, as a native English speaker, if you can get over the _very_ _slow_ speed of speech and exaggerated enunciation (which, as stated above, is by design to use as an educational element).

All of this fascinates me for a couple of reasons. Government stations are always fun to listen to because of the slant they put into their broadcasts (whether slight or large), educational broadcasts are interesting, and mainly, it makes me wonder if other countries offer a similar service to learn their language. Hmmm…

E10_l

I’ve been planning on getting into this for a long time, ever since I started researching Eastern Asian history (Cold War, etc.) and found out about cool things like numbers stations, Voice of America, Voice of Korea and a ton of other shortwave broadcasts from across the ocean.

So, I finally picked up an Eton E10 shortwave radio last night (picture above), and I’ve been playing around with it all night and morning. I’m finding some pretty cool things, not the least of which exist on what I’ll call the sub-FM band in Portland, Oregon. The reason I call this the sub-FM band (I’m sure there’s a more technical name for it, but it works for now) is because standard the North American FM frequency band is 87.5-108.0MHz. I changed the options on my radio to *also* pick up the Japanese FM band which exists in the 76-90MHz range.

So far, I’ve found a simulcast (or something) of 99.5 The Wolf coming in loud and clear on 78.1-78.2MHz. Haven’t had much luck with the shortwave band yet, partly because I’m inside an office building, but I have a feeling I’ll geek out on that tonight. Good times. =)

P.S. I heard Biggie playing on 78.68 MHz. Old sk00l. ;-)

What to do with several hundred soon-to-be-scrapped Itanium CPUs?

Inspired by the Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories
(http://www.evilmadscientist.com/article.php/chiptrivet), I decided to
tile my desk with them. This is the result.

For the record:
- there are 434 Madison 9M chips on the desk.
- list price for the lot in 2006 was over US$800,000.
- the chips and glass plate have made my desk about 50kg heavier.
- my desk now contains about 2.8 TFLOPs of computing power. That’s about the same
as 900 3.2GHz P4s.

Wow. Just wow. This isn’t the only car from China that scored a 1 star safety rating. I don’t know of any car in recent times that has scored that low. Hell, I don’t even know of any that have scored less than a 4 star rating.

From TimesOnline.co.uk:

The JiangLing Landwind was displayed at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week and is expected to arrive in British showrooms within months. It is already on sale in Holland, Germany and Belgium and has been billed as the vanguard of a new invasion of Chinese vehicles.

The two-ton 4×4 scored zero stars in crash tests last week by the ADAC, the German automobile club, which carries out tests for Euro NCAP. “It had a catastrophic result,” said a spokesman for the ADAC. “In our 20-year history no car has performed as badly.”

Testers calculated that a driver would be unlikely to survive a head-on collision at 40mph, and in a side-on collision at 30mph the driver would suffer severe head and chest injuries due to a lack of side protection.

Here’s *another* car from China that gets a 1 star safety rating:

OK, this looks pretty awesome. According to AutoBlog.com, a new “AE86 type car” has been created by Toyota’s “Committee to create interesting cars.”

The article also states that the car’s weight will be below 1000kg and it will have a 1.5L 2NZ-FE engine with 120hp, as well as a RWD drivetrain from Subaru (Fuji Heavy Industries). Oh, and it’s expected to be around $12,300 USD.

This looks like a winner. I’ve been thinking about picking up an old ‘86 Toyota Corolla (AE86) to try my drifting skillz (no, I don’t currently have any. =P), but this might be the better bet.

Full article here (though it’s not much longer than what I just wrote): http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/01/rumoured-new-ae86-more-details/

This is pro-awesome. I was hoping 7-zip (my favorite archiving tool) would be able to handle MSIs on its own, but alas, it cannot. Instead, this tool works wonders:

http://blogs.pingpoet.com/overflow/pubfiles/Lessmsierables-20050611.zip

I’m not a fan of Microsoft’s .msi installer files. They’re slow, they don’t let me pick start menu groups, and they are a major overkill for lots of tiny program installations that I use where a simple rar file (okay zip would work too) would be much more suitable. So sometime last year I spent a night hacking together a simple tool that lets me take these miserable .msi files and extract their contents. Since others may find it useful too, I figured I’d put it out here.

The codes below should work on all Symbian S60 (Nokia, etc) phones to wipe them clean:

Per Nokia FAQ:
http://www.nokia.com.au/nokia/0,,37167,00.html
Lock Code = 1234 / Security Code = 12345

Normal Reset

(*#7780#) : Restores ini files from rom but preserves user data (photos, 3rd party apps etc)

Deep Reset

(*#7370#) : This reformats completely the C: drive. All applications and files stored on this drive will be lost and clean default files will be rewritten.

Surprising Expiration Dates : RealSimple.com

Certain items in your house practically scream “toss me” when their prime has passed. That mysterious extra white layer on the Cheddar? A sure sign it needs to be put out of its misery. Chunky milk? Down the drain it goes.

But what about that jar of olives or Maraschino cherries that has resided in your refrigerator since before the birth of your kindergartner? Or the innumerable nonedibles lurking deep within your cabinets and closets: stockpiled shampoo and toothpaste, seldom-used silver polish? How do you know when their primes have passed?

With help from experts and product manufacturers, Real Simple has compiled a guide to expiration dates. These dates are offered as a rough guideline. The shelf lives of most products depend upon how you treat them. Edibles, unless otherwise indicated, should be stored in a cool, dry place. (With any food, of course, use common sense.) Household cleaners also do best in a dry place with a stable temperature. After the dates shown, beauty and cleaning products are probably still safe but may be less effective.
