Since I reference this list a lot, I decided to create its own page. 🙂

Top 10 Free Windows Apps:

  1. Mozilla Firefox
Best. Web. Browser. Period. Fast, secure, tabbed browsing, extensions, ad-blocking, etc… Just check it out. ;-)
  2. Gaim
Instead of running AIM, Yahoo Messenger, MSN, etc. all at once, why not just run one program. And, oh wait, it’s free.
Drop-in replacement for Microsoft Office. Reads/writes way more formats than Microsoft. I use it almost exclusively now. And, saves ya $300+ on a M$ License.
  4. iTunes
    Like music? ‘Nuff said.
  5. VLC / Media Player Classic
Plays *everything* under the sun. Smaller memory footprint than just about any other media player, and oh yeah, it’s free. (Media Player Classic also has the benefit of being a standalone .EXE)
  6. Notepad2 / DarkRoom
Tied for replacement of EmEditor as my text editor(s) of choice, mainly because it’s free and self-contained. Notepad2 is a full featured windowed text-editor, and DarkRoom is full screen old sk00l monocrome text editing bliss.
  7. XPize
Makes Windows XP look quite nice and saves me a ton of UI tweaking time.
  8. Paint.NET
Excellent replacement for Windows Paint – and *tons* more features. Not quite as many as GIMP, but loads a bit faster. And, I’m a .NET progammer, so I like that about it too. -D
  9. µTorrent
Itsy bitsy BitTorrent client that doesn’t need an installer. One standalone .EXE. Nice!
  10. AVG Free Edition
Best Antivirus program out there, in my opinion. And, it’s free.

New Noteworthy Apps:

  • SyncToy – Freeware Microsoft app that, well, synchronizes files. I use this all the time to make sure my portable drive is in sync with my PC.
  • RocketDock – Excellent freeware app that provides very similar functionality to the Mac OS X dock in Windows XP/Vista. Slick animations and ease of use make this app great!
  • CDBurnerXP Pro – Freeware disc-burning app, somewhat similar to Nero or EasyCDCreator.
  • DeepBurner – Another freeware (basic version) disc-burning app.
  • FeedReader – This is my favorite RSS reader for Windows, very similar to Liferea on Linux (I think Liferea is actually based on FeedReader, but I’m not sure). Great features, and it’s free.
  • WinSCP – From the site: ” WinSCP is an open source free SFTP client and FTP client for Windows. Legacy SCP protocol is also supported. Its main function is safe copying of files between a local and a remote computer.”

More to come…
